I had my first experience with any hospice care company a couple of weeks ago when my Mama was in her last days on this earth! We chose Affinity Hospice Care because a friend knew of their services and recommended them. Referring back to when Mama was in the hospital at Princeton Baptist Medical Center, the doctor explained to us that she would never get better because her Emphysema and COPD was too serious! We were told we should consider putting Mother in Hospice Care of either at home or in the hospital. It was impossible for her last days, weeks or months to be spent at home because I have to work every day and we had no one to be able to stay with her 24/7 so we chose Hospice in the hospital at Princeton Baptist Hospital. It was explained to us (my brother, sister and I that Hospice would do everything to make sure mother wouldn't be in pain and their goal was to manage her pain until either she stopped breathing or her heart stopped! I guess in my mind that although none of us knew exactly how long Mother would still be with us I feel like they "rushed" her passing!!! I've had a really hard time getting the image out of my head when the nurse gave Mom 3 heavy doses of morphine back to back, and how quickly it all happened and watched her draw her last breath!! I feel like they killed her! They didn't wait any time in between the doses intravenously to see if her breathing would level out!!! Within 2 hours of the time the hospital moved her from her regular room to the room up one floor for hospice care she was dead!!! I mean I realize she wasn't going to get better but I sure didn't realize her care was going to be like that or that fast!!!! There were 3 nurses in the room with us and 1 nurse injected a heavy dose of morphine and another nurse injected her IV with 3 more heavy doses of morphine!!! I don't know if I'll ever get over witnessing that happening so hastily!! I am thankful Mama is not in pain anymore and that she's breathing easy up in Heaven with the ones that went before her!! ??????
