Several things to say about VITAS. First and foremost, every staff member that entered our home to help my grandfather in his last days was friendly, knowledgeable and professional. The issue that my family and I have stems from VITAS' utter lack of communication from their central office out to their in-home staff. Every step of my grandfather's care was botched, starting from his initial admission and even through to the day after his death when someone showed up to bathe him without knowing he had passed. Communication needs to change starting at leadership on down. Create a system of client care coordinators or quality management that can make follow up calls with family to ensure things are going smoothly. If a call can't be made, a courtesy check up with a survey of questions would help. Staff- great. Communication- terrible. I cannot speak on inpatient services and they may very well be perfect, this is only a review of the in home care my family and I received for my grandfather.

When VITAS took my ex wive's case she was critical with 15 times in emergency admissions by local hospitals. With 1 nursing visit weekly and 1 doctors monthly visit. The system took her in. The nurses were always late and with no patient records. They ridicule her age, gender, and religious believes. Insisting for a sign out disclosure. Her medications were never on time and incomplete. The VITAS doctor changed her cardiac medications without consultation with her cardiologist creating a Neuro cardiac medical crisis delivering her to ICU Florida hospital one week for medication correction and cardiac evaluation. For an urinary tract infection (UTI) she was left untreated and neglected by the VITAS resident team doctor having to be treated by Florida hospital emergency unit. The infection had spread to a kidney developing an inflammatory urinary obstruction. After the treatment services were provided. VITAS called in grievance mode complaining that it should have been treated by their medical team. Later a VITAS nurse coordinator stormed her apartment on a very abusive confrontational way to make her sign out of the program. Her argument was asking her patient to estimate her date of death 3 times demanding that it was time for to sign out of the program because of her unstable health condition. Weeks later, stating that her case was to irregular another nurse messenger relating the same request provoked an argument upsetting my ex wife into a neuro cardiac syncopal seizure at her apartment. The nurse refused to give her the anti- seizure medication who were at an emergency case to stop the episode. 911 was called in resulting in her emergency admission at Florida hospital. Discrimination, abuse, and medical neglect by this program and her medical team have been used by this program to pressure her decision into signing out without her consent. By cutting her oxygen and other needed life support health equipment's ; ---------- leaving her on her own. Legal consult has been taken on this case. VITAS is a big liability program if your patient is in a critical health situation they are a health risk medical service. 3-30-2017

Thank God for Vitas Hospice Care and for Dr. Denise Clark. I can't say enough about the level of care my Mom received in her last months here. From the very beginning Dr. Denise Clark and Vitas exceeded our expectations, even though my my Mom was reluctant to go on Hospice care. At the end of her time they made everything easy for my family and I allowing us to focus on her while they managed all medications, ordered round the clock care and had necessary equipment delivered. Dr. Denise Clark kept in constant contact with us, going out of her way to make sure everything was handled. I would recommend Vitas and Dr. Denise Clark to anyone with a friend or family member going through or researching end of life care. Thank you so much Vitas and Dr. Clark for all you did. Your care and concern will not be forgotten.
