I have been in Hospice 15 years in another Texas city. I encouraged my uncle to put his wife in Hospice for end of life care. I am heart broken that he had a horrible experience. Dr Dawson scolded him because my Aunt lived weeks longer than originally thought. She was alert up until the last couple of days. She enjoyed the time with her husband, friend, grandchildren and great grandchildren despite the Hospice instructions to turn out the lights and stay quiet so she could pass. Luckily this was ignored and she lit up with joy at their visits. Talking and laughing. It was even suggested that he quit giving her food and water so the body would start shutting down. The pathophysiology of this was explained to him. Shame on this Hospice. Hospice goals should be to make every day the best day possible, while doing nothing to speed up or delay the end of life process. Weeks after her passing this dear man devoted to doing the right thing is tormented by the unprofessional and unethical actions of this Hospice. He is very quick to praise the select staff that truly showed compassion. Once again Shame on you Hospice of the Big Country and shame on you Dr. Dawson.
