This service will probably satisfy most people; I'll look elsewhere the next time. Requested hospice for my 97 year old father on a Monday. "Intake Nurse" came on Wednesday morning, and acknowledged they were short-staffed, and had no case manager available, but that someone would be assigned temporarily. A few days later a Nurse interviewed me and and to a limited extent, my father. Very nice young nurse; indicated all regular meds should be stopped and regular morphine administration begun, but orders to nursing home staff never made clear. Coordination of care between hospice and nursing home unclear and incident late on a Friday evening made too clear that hospice nursing service was totally not in place beyond normal business hours. Actually, hospice nursing from this company seems to be a Monday - Friday activity only. Father died Sunday morning at 12:30 am; notification was immediate from nursing home, which asked for and were given funeral home instructions to pick up the body; and an hour or so later a Vitas chaplain called (a service I had been asked about and earlier declined) and requested the same funeral home information. That was the last and only contact with Vitas to this time, full three days later. Overall, pleasant enough people but not really a service that was of much help, although others have hopefully had much better experience. And since Medicare (meaning all of us) will be paying for this service, I thought I should share my limited experience. FRIDAY UPDATE: Now 5 days later, received a phone message acknowledging I should have been contacted sooner, and now offering "whatever services might be helpful." Nice message overtaken by events!
